A

A-frame rack

An angled steel rack used to store or transport stone slabs upright. The shape keeps heavy material supported while leaving room for lifting equipment.

Apron-front sink

A sink with an exposed front panel that extends past the cabinet face. Fabricators often call it a farmhouse sink and must account for its exact height and cabinet support.

B

Backsplash

A vertical strip or panel installed where the countertop meets the wall. It protects the wall from water and can be made from the same slab as the worktop.

B

Bookmatching

A layout method that opens two neighboring slabs like pages of a book. The mirrored veining creates a continuous, symmetrical pattern across the seam.

Bridge saw

A shop machine that moves a cutting head over a slab on a fixed table. It is commonly used for straight cuts, sink openings, and shaping countertop parts.

Bullnose edge

A fully rounded countertop edge with a soft profile from top to bottom. The curve reduces sharp corners and gives the edge a traditional look.

C

CAD

Computer-aided design software used to draw countertop parts at accurate dimensions. CAD files can guide quoting, review, nesting, and machine production.

CNC

Computer numerical control equipment that follows programmed toolpaths. In a fabrication shop, CNC machines cut, drill, profile, and polish stone parts with repeatable accuracy.

Cooktop cutout

An opening cut into a countertop for a hob or cooktop. Its size, corner radius, clearances, and reinforcement must match the appliance specification.

Corbel

A bracket installed below a countertop to support an overhang. Corbels can be structural, decorative, or both.

Countertop

A durable horizontal work surface installed over cabinets or supports. Stone countertops are templated, fabricated, finished, and installed to fit a specific space.

D

Digital templating

The process of measuring a jobsite with laser or photogrammetry equipment and creating a digital model. The captured geometry reduces manual transcription and can flow directly into CAD.

Dry lay

A shop review in which cut parts are arranged together before installation. It helps the team check seams, color, vein flow, and part orientation.

D

DXF

A common file format for exchanging two-dimensional CAD geometry. Fabricators use DXF files to move measured shapes between design, nesting, and machine software.

E

Eased edge

A mostly square edge with the sharp top and bottom corners lightly softened. It is a common choice when the design should look clean without feeling harsh.

Edge profile

The finished shape applied to the exposed edge of a countertop. Examples include eased, bevel, bullnose, ogee, and laminated or mitered profiles.

Epoxy seam adhesive

A two-part bonding material used to join countertop sections. Pigment can be added so the cured seam blends more closely with the slab.

Fabrication drawing

A dimensioned shop drawing that tells the production team what to make. It normally shows part sizes, cutouts, seams, edges, overhangs, and material direction.

Faucet hole

A drilled opening for a faucet, soap dispenser, air switch, or other deck-mounted fitting. Hole diameter and position should be confirmed against the fixture.

Field measure

The onsite check of walls, cabinets, appliances, and other conditions before fabrication. It may be completed with physical templates or digital measuring tools.

Finish

The surface treatment that controls how stone looks and feels. Polished, honed, and textured finishes reflect light differently and require different care.

G

Grain direction

The visual or structural direction running through a material. Keeping the direction consistent can improve the appearance of adjacent parts and edge build-ups.

Granite

A natural igneous stone widely used for countertops because it is hard, heat resistant, and available in many patterns. Each slab varies in color and movement.

H

Hand polish

Polishing completed with portable tools rather than an automated machine. It is often used on corners, small returns, seam areas, and details that need manual control.

H

Honed finish

A smooth, low-sheen surface made by stopping the polishing process before a high gloss develops. It gives stone a softer appearance but may show handling marks more readily.

I

Installation

The final placement, leveling, joining, and securing of fabricated countertop parts at the jobsite. Installers also check fit, seam quality, overhangs, and sink support.

I

Island countertop

A countertop fitted to a freestanding cabinet or work area. Islands often require careful planning for overhang support, seams, cutouts, and visible edge treatment.

Job ticket

A production record that travels with a countertop job or part. It links the approved dimensions, material, finish, edge details, deadlines, and shop instructions.

Joint

A location where two fabricated pieces meet. The joint may be an adhesive seam, a miter, a butt joint, or another connection designed for the material and application.

K

Kerf

The narrow slot removed by a saw blade or cutting tool. Kerf width affects final part size, nesting allowances, and material yield.

Kitchen run

A connected line of cabinets and countertop along one wall or work zone. Fabricators use runs to organize measurements, parts, seams, and installation sequence.

L

Layout

The planned position and orientation of countertop parts on one or more slabs. A good layout balances appearance, seam placement, strength, and material use.

L

Leathered finish

A textured finish created with abrasive brushes that opens the stone’s natural grain. It has a soft sheen and a tactile surface rather than a mirror gloss.

L

Linear foot

A length measurement equal to 12 inches, regardless of width. It is often used for pricing edge work, backsplashes, or other narrow fabrication details.

Lippage

A height difference between two surfaces that should meet evenly, such as countertop pieces at a seam. Careful leveling and support help minimize it.

M

Marble

A natural stone known for flowing veining and a luminous appearance. It can make an elegant countertop but is more sensitive to acids, scratches, and etching than many other materials.

Material lot

A batch of slabs produced or supplied together. Color and pattern can shift between lots, so matching material from the same lot is often important.

Mitered edge

An edge built by joining pieces cut at an angle, usually 45 degrees. It can make a thin slab look substantially thicker while keeping the pattern flowing over the edge.

N

Nesting

The process of arranging countertop parts on slab images or digital sheets. The goal is to protect key visual areas while reducing waste and avoiding defects.

Notch

A shaped recess cut from the edge of a countertop part. Notches are used to fit around walls, posts, cabinets, clips, and other site conditions.

O

Off-cut

A piece of material left after larger parts have been cut from a slab. Useful off-cuts may be saved for small components, samples, repairs, or future jobs.

O

Ogee edge

A decorative edge profile with an S-shaped curve. It is commonly used when a countertop needs a more traditional or detailed appearance.

Overhang

The portion of a countertop that extends beyond the cabinet or support below it. Long overhangs may need brackets, corbels, or a concealed support system.

P

Polished finish

A glossy surface produced through progressively finer abrasives. It deepens color and reflects light, while making natural patterns appear more vivid.

Porcelain slab

A large-format engineered ceramic panel fired at high temperature. It is thin, dense, UV stable, and resistant to heat and staining, but its fabrication requires suitable tools and handling.

Production schedule

The planned sequence and timing of fabrication work. It coordinates templates, material, programming, machine time, finishing, and installation commitments.

Q

Quartz

An engineered surface made from mineral particles, pigments, and resin. It offers consistent colors and low routine maintenance, but heat and outdoor exposure limits depend on the manufacturer.

Q

Quartzite

A natural metamorphic stone formed from sandstone under heat and pressure. Many varieties are very hard, though performance and porosity still vary by slab.

Quote

A priced proposal based on the job’s material, dimensions, fabrication, delivery, and installation requirements. A clear quote states what is included and what may change after final measurement.

R

Radius corner

A corner formed as part of a circle instead of a sharp point. The radius value defines how tight or broad the curve will be.

Remnant

A usable piece of slab left after the original job is cut. Remnants are commonly sold for vanities, hearths, shelves, and other small projects.

R

Rodding

A reinforcement method that places a rod in a channel cut into the underside of stone. It may be used around sinks or narrow sections when the fabricator’s method calls for added strength.

S

Seam

The joined line between two countertop pieces. Its final appearance depends on placement, slab matching, edge preparation, adhesive color, leveling, and installation skill.

S

Shop drawing

An approved drawing that translates design intent into fabrication information. It gives the shop and installer a shared reference for dimensions, details, and part relationships.

Sink cutout

The opening prepared for a sink. The cutout must match the sink type, reveal, corner radii, mounting method, and required support.

S

Sintered stone

A manufactured slab made by compacting mineral ingredients and bonding them with intense heat and pressure. It is valued for heat, stain, and UV resistance.

Slab

A large, flat sheet of natural or manufactured surfacing material. Fabricators inspect, photograph, measure, and cut slabs into the parts needed for a project.

Slab inventory

The record of slabs currently available, reserved, in production, or already used. Accurate inventory includes dimensions, material details, lot information, location, and status.

Slab yield

The usable countertop area produced from a slab after accounting for kerf, defects, grain, seams, and required margins. Higher yield means less material is lost.

T

Tear-out

The removal of existing countertops, splashes, sinks, or related materials before installation. The scope should clarify who handles disposal and any cabinet or wall repairs.

Templating

The measurement stage that captures the exact shape and site conditions for a countertop. Templates may be physical or digital and become the basis for fabrication drawings.

Thickness

The measured depth of a slab or finished countertop edge. Common nominal thicknesses can vary slightly, so actual material should be checked before detailed fabrication.

U

Undermount sink

A sink attached below the countertop so the counter edge remains visible around the opening. The reveal, polish, mounting, and support method should be specified before cutting.

U

Upstand

A short vertical piece installed along the back of a countertop, similar to a low backsplash. The term is common in the UK and parts of Europe.

V

Vanity top

A countertop made for a bathroom cabinet or washstand. Vanity tops often use remnants and may include an integrated, vessel, or undermount basin.

V

Vein matching

The deliberate alignment of veins or directional patterns across seams and adjoining parts. It is planned during slab layout and confirmed before cutting.

W

Waterfall panel

A vertical countertop panel that continues from the top down to the floor or cabinet base. Careful mitering and vein alignment can make the material appear to fold over the edge.

W

Waterjet cutting

A cutting process that uses a high-pressure stream of water, often mixed with abrasive. It can produce detailed shapes, tight inside corners, and precise cutouts.

Wet polishing

Polishing performed with water to cool the tool, control dust, and carry away slurry. Shops need suitable water management and electrical safety procedures.

X

X-axis

The horizontal left-to-right direction in a CAD drawing or CNC coordinate system. Machine programs use it with the Y and Z axes to position tools accurately.

Y

Yield

The percentage or amount of purchased material that becomes usable finished parts. Layout choices, defects, kerf, and remnant strategy all affect yield.

Z

Z-axis

The vertical axis in a CNC coordinate system. It controls tool height, cutting depth, drilling, and safe clearance above the material.

Z

Zero-radius sink

A sink with very tight or square inside corners. Its geometry requires accurate programming, suitable tooling, and careful finishing at the cutout.
